The Commuter [2017] ★★½

Liam Neeson is on a train. No, his daughter hasn’t been kidnapped. I know you’re tempted to call it “Taken” on a train. Or maybe “Non-Stop” the train version. Ok, I’ll stop. Director Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed Neeson in several films before, throws our hero this time around on a train, where a mysterious woman (Vera Farmiga) asks him to do a “small task” in return for money. Who is she and what is she after? That’s the hook that will lead you into “The Commuter”, a well-made thriller that borrows a lot from other films from the same genre, but is effective all the same (at least until the chaotic climax). Neeson, who has established himself well enough as an action hero, kicks ass yet again in this tense, edge-of-your seat film. The only thing that doesn’t truly work is the insanely crazy final act. But when a movie has entertained you for a while, you may be willing to forgive its shortcomings. And that’s exactly how I felt towards this film. Is it original? Not really. Is it fun? You bet.
